It’s a cold November morning in Orem. Your car sat outside all night, the glass is frosted over, and you need to get to UVU or your office on State Street. You crank the defroster to high, and a few minutes later a line starts running across the glass. A windshield crack from the defroster is more common than most drivers think, and it’s almost always preventable.

Windshield Cracked by the Defroster? Why It Happens in Orem Winters

Why does my windshield crack when I turn on the defroster?

Short answer: thermal shock. Hot air heats the bottom of the glass fast while the rest of the windshield is still freezing. The glass expands unevenly, and that stress finds the weakest spot, which is usually a rock chip, a pit or edge damage that was already there.

Your windshield is laminated glass: two layers of glass with a plastic layer in between. It’s strong, but it doesn’t like sudden temperature changes. When one area is much warmer than another, the glass pulls in different directions. If there’s a small chip, the crack starts right there and can run across the windshield in seconds.

Why it happens so often during Orem winters

Freezing mornings, sunny afternoons

In Utah Valley, winter nights regularly drop below freezing and the afternoon sun warms things back up. That daily swing wears on the glass over time. Cars parked outside overnight, on the street or in an apartment lot near UVU, take the worst of it.

Rocks and grit from I-15 and winter roads

Between I-15, University Parkway and streets treated with grit and salt all winter, it’s easy to pick up a rock chip. Many drivers don’t notice it, or put off fixing it. That chip is exactly where the defroster ends up opening a crack.

The morning rush

Scraping ice properly takes time, so a lot of drivers blast the heat to “beat” the cold. That’s the hardest thing you can do to your glass.

How to keep your defroster from cracking your windshield

  1. Start warm, not hot. Turn the defroster on low and raise the temperature gradually over a few minutes.
  2. Never use hot water. Pouring hot water on frozen glass is the fastest way to crack it.
  3. Use a plastic scraper. No metal tools or cards that can scratch the glass.
  4. Brush the snow off first. The glass warms more evenly when it isn’t buried.
  5. Fix rock chips before the cold sets in. A repaired chip is no longer a weak spot. Rock chip repair is done at our Spanish Fork shop and is usually quick.
  6. Park under cover when you can, or use a windshield cover on the coldest nights.

Quick guide: do’s and don’ts

Do Don’t
Defroster on low, then raise it slowly Full heat on frozen glass
Plastic scraper Hot water or metal tools
Repair chips before winter Wait for a chip to “go away”
Check your glass after a rock hit on I-15 Ignore a small spot

How to check your windshield after a cold morning

Once the glass is clear, take thirty seconds to look it over from outside the car. Run your eyes along the bottom edge, where the defroster blows hardest, and around any spot where you remember a rock hit. A chip that looks like a small star or a bullseye is a warning sign. If you see a thin line growing from it, don’t wait for the weekend: a crack that starts in the morning cold can be twice as long by the evening drive home.

I already have a crack. What now?

If the crack is long, crosses the driver’s line of sight or reaches the edge, replacing the windshield is the safe call. Your windshield supports part of the car’s structure and helps the airbags deploy correctly, so it’s not something to drive on for weeks.

The good news: you don’t have to go anywhere. With our mobile windshield replacement in Orem, we come to your home, your office or your UVU parking lot, with no travel fee.

Does your car have a camera on the windshield?

If your car has automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist or other ADAS features, the camera has to be calibrated after a windshield replacement. It’s required by the vehicle manufacturer and by many insurers. We do the ADAS calibration during the same mobile visit. Some models need a static calibration with targets; for those, we take care of it at our Spanish Fork shop.

What if it’s still just a chip?

If it’s a small chip and not a crack yet, it can usually be repaired. Book a rock chip repair at our Spanish Fork shop before the next cold front turns it into a crack.

FAQ

Can a defroster crack a windshield with no chips?

It’s rare. In most cases the crack starts at existing damage, even if it’s tiny or hidden near the edge.

Will my insurance cover a crack from cold weather?

Many policies with comprehensive coverage include glass, and in many cases the deductible is $0. We handle the claim with your insurance company for you.

How long can I drive with the crack?

As little as possible. In cold weather a crack can grow overnight and block your view.
