Differentiating Features On Your Vehicle
Every vehicle’s glass has different features such as dimensions, shading, electronic/non-electronic rear view mirrors, sensors, and even cameras for vehicle safety features. To determine the type of glass on the vehicle, here are some things to look for.
- Third Visor Frit
- Shade Band
- Electronic Rear View Mirror
- Heated Wiper Park
- Fully Heated Windshields
- Rain Sensor
- Condensation Sensor
- Heads Up Display
- Lane Departure Warning System
- Road Sign Assist
- Pre Collision and Pedestrian Detection
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Lane Tracing Assist
- Lane Keep Assist
Is a black speckled/dotted shading on the windshield behind your rear view mirror. It is designed to keep the sun out of your eyes in the space between your fold down visors. This is where it gets the name of “Third Visor”.
Similar to the third visor, the objective of the windshield shade band is to keep the sun out of your eyes. However, instead of exclusively being behind the rear view mirror, it is a band of tint that runs along the entire top of your windshield. The most common colors are green and blue.
A rear-view mirror that has electrical components and automatically adjusts to night driving conditions. The easiest way to know if you have an electrochromic mirror is if you have any of the following: a digital compass in the mirror, buttons, or if there is not ‘flip tab’ coming out of the bottom.
Heated lines that run underneath the area that your wipers sit. You may or may not have a de-icer button inside to manually turn them on. They are often quite well hidden from a distance but upon close examination, they should be visible.
Heated windshields contain wires that defrost windows. These wires can look like the defrosting system in your rear window. Drivers turn on the heating element with the push of a button, and the warmth prevents wiper blades from freezing to the glass, and thaws out snow and ice within minutes. Both heated wipers and windshields are still relatively new. Vehicles that do have this feature are at more risk of needing a windshield replacement rather than a chip repair that others. Reason being that filling a chip in this glass can affect the small heating wires to work properly. The manufacturers that offer this type of glass are: Ford, Land Rover, Skoda, Mini, Nissan, Seat, Jaguar, Volkswagen, Vauxhall, and Ashton Martin.
Small gel pack adhered to the windshield either by the rear view mirror or the lower right hand side of the windshield. If you are unsure, you can know because if you have a rain sensor, when it begins to rain, your wipers will turn on automatically. From the outside, it can appear to look like a small camera, but that is just the gel.
Usually located near the rear view mirror, it detects moisture on the inside of the windshield and automatically adjusts the climate control to reduce the fogging effect.
Some vehicles actually project information onto the windshield (such as speed, temperature, navigation instructions etc.). This allows the driver to be able to keep an eye on the important information about the vehicle without taking their eyes off the road.
This safety feature will notify you when you are drifting between lanes without using your signal light. It uses a camera attached to the windshield to function. It may beep, vibrate, show a picture on your navigation system, and/or light up an indicator. When a Windshield is replaced that has this feature, the camera will also need to be recalibrated to function properly.
Using an intelligent camera, Road Sign Assist (RSA) * is designed to detect speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs and certain warning signs, and display an icon of the sign on the Multi-Information Display.
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD) * is designed to help detect a vehicle, pedestrian, bicyclist, or motorcyclist and provide an audio/visual forward-collision warning under certain circumstances. If you don’t react, the system is designed to provide automatic emergency braking.
Intended for highway use, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) * and available Full-Speed Range DRCC, * is an adaptive cruise control system that is designed to be set at speeds above 20 mph and uses vehicle-to-vehicle distance control to help maintain a preset distance from the vehicle ahead of you.
When Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) or available Full-Speed Range DRCC * are enabled and lane markers are detected, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) * uses the lines on the road and/or preceding vehicles to provide active driving assistance and help keep the vehicle centered in its lane. While LTA is activated, the available Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) is designed to monitor the driver's inputs, such as steering operation. If the EDSS determines the driver is not attentive and the driver does not respond to prompts to resume control of the vehicle, it can bring the vehicle to a stop under certain conditions.
Lane keep assist or related terms, like lane keeping assist or Active Lane Keeping Assist, are advanced driver-assistance systems designed to keep you from unintentionally drifting out of your lane. LKA typically uses a front-facing camera to identify lane markings and will automatically intervene if you drift toward or over the marking without using your turn signal. The systems use steering correction and/or selective braking on the opposite side of the vehicle to nudge you back into your lane.
